Metalwork & Woodwork Introductory Course

This is a practical hands-on course in Metalwork and Woodwork for people exiting the prison or probation system. This 8-week course is designed to help participants who are interested in developing a new career, learning a new set of skills or starting their own venture.

1. Health & Safety

Having a sound knowledge of industrial health and safety principles gives you an understanding of the potential hazards of working in a commercial manufacturing environment.

This course will teach you the fundamentals of Health and Safety as they apply to a woodworking and metalworking facility. It will enable you to identify hazards and to take appropriate precautions to avoid them and reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

On completing the course, participants should have a strong working knowledge of how to work safely in a woodwork and metalwork facility.


2. Metalwork

You will have the opportunity to learn a selection of metalwork skills and processes that include:

  • Metalwork machinery and benchwork.
  • An introduction to welding.
  • Measuring and marking out.
  • Identifying and choosing hand tools.
  • Making a metal product.
  • Surface finishing.

On completing of the course you should be able to:

  • Read a basic drawing.
  • Select the appropriate materials for your project.
  • Complete the steps to form the material into predetermined shapes.
  • Join a multi-part project piece together by welding.
  • Reach an acceptable standard of finish.
  • Apply a finish to the project.

3. Woodwork

You will have the opportunity to learn a selection of woodworking skills and processes that include:

  • Operating a variety of woodworking hand tools.
  • Using power tools and machines.
  • Measuring and marking out.
  • Creating basic drawings and making cutting lists.
  • Making a wooden product.
  • Applying an appropriate finish to a product.

On completing the course you should be able to:

  • Identify and operate a selection of woodwork hand tools, power tools and machines.
  • Create accurate measurements, read a basic woodwork drawing and make up a cutting list.
  • Construct and and finish a simple woodwork product made of multiple parts.
  • Have a good knowledge of woodworking terms and concepts.

Start Your Own Venture

This workshop is deisgned to help you identify options and resources that will help you think more clearly about setting up a new personal, commercial or creative venture.

Pyrography (Wood Burning) Art Class

This is an relaxing opportunity to learn a new artform and to apply it to your newly-made wooden products.
